Faith and Growing Older

It seems as though time passes more quickly as we get older.

I am convinced that this is merely an illusion.

It is merely our perspective that changes.

I was reminded of this as I looked at the calendar for this year.

Like every one of us, I have another birthday coming up.

This birthday has a special significance for me.

It is not a milestone birthday in the traditional sense of the word.

It is significant to me because this is the year I will reach the age my father reached when he left this world.

One might think this would fill me with a sense of fear or foreboding.

It does not.

Though my father died at an age most people considered relatively young, faith tells me that my time is not truly in my hands.

Matthew 10:29-31 (NET) – Aren’t two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. Even all the hairs on your head are numbered. So, do not be afraid; you are more valuable than many sparrows.

I do not know how much time I have left in this world.

I would not wish to know.

I am content to take each day as it comes.

As time goes by there are things of which I can be certain.

Time will seem to go by more quickly.

The number of gray hairs in my beard will grow more numerous.

Eventually, the hairs on my head will turn gray as well.

The noises I currently hear in my joints will be accompanied by pain the pain of arthritis.

But, like wine, I plan to improve with age especially where my faith is concerned,

I would not trade the faith I have today for anything… including youth.

That same faith will deepen as time goes by.

That is because I will continue to rely more on Him as time goes by.

There is also a wonderful promise recorded in Matthew, and it is recorded in the very next verse.

Matthew 10:32 (NET) – “Whoever, then, acknowledges Me before people, I will acknowledge before My Father in heaven.”

With whatever time I have remaining, I will continue to do just that.
