Thankful Hearts and Transformed Lives

Psalm 69:5 (NRSVue) - O God, you know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.

Psalm 69 is a prayer for deliverance from persecution.

In it, the Psalmist recognizes God’s omniscience.

He understands that God knows everything.

As such, God knows the sins that he has committed.

God knows when we fall short as well.

But God is both generous and forgiving,

He has already planned for our redemption.

We are redeemed through the blood of Christ.

We are forgiven by grace.

Paul understood this.

He explained the spiritual blessing in Christ in his letter to the Ephesians.

Ephesians 1:7 (NRSVue) - In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace

Thanksgiving Day is over.

But we should always be thankful for redemption and forgiveness.

May we be aware of this as we enter the season of Advent.

God is as generous as He is merciful.

And we should be thankful for all the gifts he has bestowed upon us.

May we be especially thankful for His greatest gift of all.

The gift of His Son whose birth we are about to celebrate.

For this is what sets Christianity apart from other religions.

Christianity is not about us reaching up to God.

Christianity is about how God reached down to the lost who could not save themselves.

And just as God gives to us, we are called upon to share with each other.

We can do so because God has transformed our hearts and lives through Christ.

The Ultimate in Unity

Psalm 118:26 (NRSVue) - Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord.

Psalm 118 is a song of victory.

It reminds us that those who come in the name of the Lord are blessed.

As such, they become a blessing to others.

The first chapter in the book of John speaks of Jesus.

It refers to Jesus as “the Word Became Flesh.”

It describes those who receive Him.

It also indicates what they become.

John 1:12 (NRSVue) - But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God,

Once we receive Christ, we become children of God.

Thus blessed, we can in turn venture out into the world and bless others.

And considering today’s headlines, the world is in dire need of blessing.

Through Christ, we can unite with others we know.

More importantly, with the gifts bestowed upon us, we can unite and bless others.

We can even be a blessing to those we will never meet in this world.

But this is not our doing.

Achieving unity on this scale is only possible through Christ.

Understanding that, we can effectively use the gifts He bestows.

This gives us hope in the promise of the day of even greater unity.

It will be a day when all will be joined together in continuous and eternal praise as one body of believers.

This body will also include those we never met in this world.

Wants, Needs, and Gratitude

Exodus 23:25a (NET) - You must serve the Lord your God, and he will bless your bread and your water,

This portion of scripture caught my attention.

It caught my attention for three reasons.

First, it reminded me that the blessing was for necessities and not luxuries.

Second, this seems to reverse the punishment that befell Adam due to his disobedience (Genesis 3).

Third, was its preceding verse which lends it context.

Exodus 23:24 (NET) - You must not bow down to their gods; you must not serve them or do according to their practices. Instead you must completely overthrow them and smash their standing stones to pieces.

I suddenly recalled a party I once attended.

This celebration was held in the stately home of its obviously wealthy hosts.

Suffice it to say, I felt more than a little out of place.

I was admiring a painting when two people walked up beside me.

One said to the other, “You know, if I had all this, I would finally be happy.”

I concluded that this was a classic example of self-deception.

For true happiness cannot be found in material things.

True happiness can only be found in union with Christ.

This is the same Christ who reminds us not to worry.

We certainly do not need to worry about extravagances.

But Christ tells us we need not even worry about necessities.

Matthew 6:31 (NET) - So then, don’t worry saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’

Many, especially those still caught up in worldly things, find this difficult.

Those who believe understand that God is the provider.

They rely upon God for their physical as well as their spiritual needs.

This remains true even during challenging times and difficult circumstances.

For it is during such times that God’s provision for us makes itself truly evident.

That is why Paul reminds us to be always thankful, no matter the circumstances.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NET) - in everything give thanks. For this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Getting on with the Job

I am in my final week of preparation to lead an Adult study on Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Bonhoeffer was a German pastor and theologian who actively resisted the Nazi regime.

In time, he and other members of this resistance were imprisoned.

Although he was locked away, Bonhoeffer ministered to both his guards and fellow prisoners.

He also spent his time authoring books, papers, and letters.

Through his writing, we see that God continued to use this man.

In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, we see that he too was imprisoned.

He continued the work God gave him to do.

In fact, his letters account for a good part of the New Testament.

Paul, like Bonhoeffer, made use of the talents that he was given.

Moreover, he understood that he was the beneficiary of grace.

This grace was a gift of Christ.

Ephesians 4:7 (NET) - But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

And this grace equips the called to do the work required regardless of circumstances.

Such work continues despite even the hardships of imprisonment and the threat of death.

The Psalmist makes this clear.

After praising the Lord, the Psalmist discusses those who seek justice.

Psalm 106:3 (NET) - How blessed are those who promote justice, and do what is right all the time.

Bonhoeffer opposed injustice and so he opposed Hitler and the Nazi regime.

As a man of God, he did what he believed was right, risking both his safety and security.

He continued his ministry until executed by those whom he opposed.

When that moment arrived, he calmly accepted his fate.

Psalm 106:4 (NET) - Remember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people. Pay attention to me, when you deliver,

Like these men, we too are the beneficiaries of forgiveness and grace.

These were paid in full by the death of Christ who was without blame.

For this we should be eternally grateful.

And may we use the talents we have been given.

And may we also continue to do the work required of us regardless of our circumstances.

Weathering the Storm

Psalm 26:12 (NET) - I am safe, and among the worshipers I will praise the Lord.

It seems a bit ironic to open with this verse these days.

The pandemic has managed to do on a global scale what nothing in recent memory has.

Worshipping in our own churches stopped.

In some cases it restarted only to stop once again.

In some cases it has resumed but with a limited number of worshippers.

Obviously, those in high risks groups should not attend.

We must also understand that some will remain uncomfortable attending in person again for quite some time.

Understanding is, after all, part of what loving one’s neighbor is all about.

Through it all, we must continue to encourage one another.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NET) - Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, just as you are in fact doing.

A wise pastor once reminded me of something at a special worship service.

He stated that the church was not the building, it was the people.

Reflecting on these words reminds me that every believer has been given gifts by God.

Those gifts can build up the church even if a believer cannot attend services at this time.

Some will use their voices.

Some will use their instruments.

Others will use brush and canvas.

Some will even use a computer and the Internet.

1 Corinthians 14:26 (NET) - What should you do then, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each one has a song, has a lesson, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all these things be done for the strengthening of the church.

All these things, and others, will continue to edify the church until the pandemic passes.

That is because the work we do is not our own.

It is granted to us and inspired by God.

Philippians 1:6 (NET) - For I am sure of this very thing, that the one who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

The pandemic has certainly changed the current landscape of worship.

These changes, and others still to come, might change the landscape permanently.

We will not know exactly how much until the pandemic has passed.

We might find these changes stressful along the way.

People, as a rule, do not like change.

But working together with God’s help we can weather the winds of change

Let faith, hope and love guide our actions and our words.

Hebrews 12:14 (NET) - Pursue peace with everyone, and holiness, for without it no one will see the Lord.

Keeping Busy-ness in Perspective

It seems these days I just don’t have enough time.

True, we did have a holiday this week.

But somehow that turns into getting five days’ worth of work done in four.

Then things cropped up at home requiring my attention.

Next, my physician reminded me it was time for my annual physical.

I also have a speaking engagement at the end of the month for which I am still preparing.

Also, I am facing another deadline at the end of the year that requires prep work now.

Then, there are my other ministries (like this one) that cannot be ignored.

I am sure anyone reading this can relate to the feeling that there just isn’t enough time.

Fortunately faith, helps us cope in times that could otherwise appear overwhelming.

Perhaps that is why my “go to” verse in these times can be found in Philippians.

Philippians 4:13 (NET) - I am able to do all things through the one who strengthens me.

I know I can get through all this because I do not go through it alone.

As for health, we have a role to play in maintaining it which includes annual physicals.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NET) - Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.

Scripture also reminds me the importance of being prepared to serve my fellow man.

This applies both to my speaking engagement and other deadlines.

1 Peter 4:10 (NET) - Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God.

Yes, I will be able to do all things through the One who strengthens me.

We all can.

But I must set aside some quiet time along the way for God and acknowledge Him.

Psalm 46:10 (NET) - He says, “Stop your striving and recognize that I am God! I will be exalted over the nations! I will be exalted over the earth!”

Through it all, no matter how busy we get, we must keep God first in our lives.

Held to a Higher Standard

I had a wonderful time this week.

It was my privilege to teach an adult class on the life of a man of God who lived in the 1600’s.

This man devoted his life to improving education for children.

This man felt that education would help lift mankind out of the cycle of cruelty and war.

His methods were nothing short of revolutionary.

In his view, education should not be limited to boys born to elite families.

Rather, education should be for everyone including girls.

He reasoned that a child’s first teacher would be his mother.

Therefore, it was important that the mother be educated as well.

People resist change.

As a result, people would resist the changes he recommended.

Education in his day consisted of rote memorization.

Boys who could not recite the lesson verbatim were often punished and humiliated.

At this point one of my students reminded me of this verse from James.

James 3:1 (NET) - Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, because you know that we will be judged more strictly.

I agreed that a teacher who uses punishment and humiliation to motivate students should not teach.

I also shared with my class that this same verse made me consider teaching very carefully.

This applies to this class I teach one per year and the one I teach every Sunday morning.

After all, who in their right mind would be willing to teach knowing they would be held to a higher standard?

For me, the beginning of comfort was found in Romans 12 where Paul discusses gifts.

Romans 12:7 (NET) - If it is service, he must serve; if it is teaching, he must teach;

Paul reminds us that those of us given the gift of teaching must teach.

He does not say we should.

He said we must.

We must however do so with care.

We must give God the glory and we must present scripture as God has given it to us.

We must never take it out of context or pick out the parts we like while disregarding the rest.

If you are called to teach, then teach; even if it means being held to a higher standard.

Simply trust God and give Him the glory.

Working by Touch

One task I do not like is performing maintenance on one of our large machines.

This must be done two or three times per year depending upon usage.

I try to do this at the end of the day when everyone else has gone home.

I must first take apart the machine and lift out some of the heavier components.

I then lie down on the floor and insert my arm inside the machine and remove a dozen small parts.

I need to rely on my sense of touch for this operation as I can no longer see inside the machine.

Once these small parts have been removed, I need to replace them with new ones.

This also requires me to rely on my sense of touch to get the job done.

Once the new parts are installed I can get up from the floor.

I then reassemble the machine and power it up.

All that is left at this point is to test the machine and verify that it is functioning properly.

Having recently performed this task, reflection brought two passages of scripture to mind.

Philippians 4:13 (NET) – I am able to do all things through the one who strengthens me.

I can perform this task only because of the abilities given to me by God.

Just as I stretch my arm into the machine, similarly, God reaches into us.

It is His touch into our hearts that allows us to be saved.

Ephesians 2:8-10 (NET) - For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so that no one can boast. For we are his workmanship, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we may do them.

I may not look forward to working on this machine again.

I certainly will not be able to look at it the same way again.

Gifts Should Give

I will be teaching an adult class in June.

This is something I do every year and I always look forward to it.

That said, it is something I never take lightly.

Scripture is quite clear on the matter of teaching.

James 3:1 (NET) - Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers and sisters, because you know that we will be judged more strictly.

So, why would anyone choose to teach knowing they will be judged more strictly?

Thankfully, scripture addresses this as well.

The twelfth chapter of the book of Romans discusses the various gifts given to us.

It also tells us what we are to do with them.

Romans 12:6- 8 (NET) - And we have different gifts according to the grace given to us. If the gift is prophecy, that individual must use it in proportion to his faith. If it is service, he must serve; if it is teaching, he must teach; if it is exhortation, he must exhort; if it is contributing, he must do so with sincerity; if it is leadership, he must do so with diligence; if it is showing mercy, he must do so with cheerfulness.

Here scripture reminds us that we “must” use whatever gifts God has generously bestowed upon us.

I take great comfort in this as I prepare for this class.

Even though it is still weeks away, I am actively preparing for this class.

Although I am familiar with the subject matter, I am using the time I have wisely.

Scripture also reminds us of the importance of being prepared.

After all, Noah began constructing the ark long before the first raindrops fell.

Hebrews 11:7a (NET) - By faith Noah, when he was warned about things not yet seen, with reverent regard constructed an ark for the deliverance of his family.

There is one unknown I face every year.

I never know how many or how few students I will have until the class meets.

Some years the attendance is large.

Some years it is small.

However many or few attend, they will receive the best I can offer.

After all, we certainly will not be alone.

Scripture is clear on that as well.

Matthew 18:20 (NET) - For where two or three are assembled in my name, I am there among them.

Put your gift from God into use.

If you have not yet discovered what that gift is, why not talk to Him about it right now?

An Open Letter to Fathers

Fathers:

Some of you know me quite well.

Some of you know me socially.

Many of you do not know me at all.

Regardless of the nature of our relationship, I know that as fathers you are concerned about your children.

I appreciate your concern especially in these times.

I have no direct experience with the responsibilities that accompany fatherhood.

That said I am well aware that all men, including me, have responsibilities where children are concerned.

Fathers teach their children with words and by example.

I might not teach your children with words, but I hope I can teach them by example.

If we attend the same church, there are things your children will see.

They will see me coming out of my Sunday school class.

They will see me at Vacation Bible School serving in some way.

They will see me participating in Christmas programs and attending rehearsals.

They will see me helping out during church in one capacity or another.

There are also some things neither you nor they ever see.

You will never see the hours I spend in committee meetings which help direct the course of their education.

You will never see me when I come in on the occasional Saturday to set up and test equipment for their use in Sunday school.

You will never see the hours of preparation and research that go into my ministries.

Some of you do not attend my church.

In fact, many of you do not know me at all.

My responsibility to your children is equally important.

Whenever I am out in public I know that there is always a chance a child might be observing me.

Your child might notice my behavior or interaction with others.

Having been a child myself, I am well aware that children are not fooled by hypocrisy.

If I should speak or behave inappropriately in a public setting, I could potentially damage valuable lessons you are trying to teach them.

I might not be a father but I am a man.

That is a role I take very seriously.

Although I have no children of my own, scripture reminds me how special all children are to the Lord.

Luke 18:16-17 (NET) - But Jesus called for the children, saying, “Let the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child will never enter it.”

Because all children are special to Him, they are special to me.

That includes your children.

No matter how well you know me, I want to be the kind of male role model for your children that other men were for me.

As fathers, you are concerned about your children.

That goes with the territory.

I appreciate that concern.

When Father’s Day comes on Sunday your children might give you a gift to express their love for you.

There is nothing I can give you that can equal that.

What I hope I have given you is one less thing to worry about.

I wish you a happy and blessed Father’s Day.

Free Access

Human beings like to stay connected.

Cell phones, email and social media are just some examples of how we stay connected with each other.

More than a few businesses have become aware of our desire to remain connected.

Some have even offered ways to help us do that as a means of attracting business.

Recently I entered a small cafe.

I chose to spend time in this particular café instead of others nearby because it offered free wireless Internet access.

After I made my purchase I took tried to connect my device to their free service.

The signal was very week,

It took quite a while for my device to connect to their service.

Once connected, I discovered the bandwidth was extremely low and it took considerable time for web pages to load.

Fortunately, I am a patient person and I knew I could live with this.

Suddenly, the signal disappeared completely.

It reappeared a few minutes later and, just like before, it disappeared.

This happened several times.

Having finished my meal, I returned home and checked my device to make certain it was working properly.

My device was in good working order.

The problems I experienced were simply due to the cafe’s free wireless Internet access.

No wonder the service was free.

Isn’t it funny that when man offers you something free of charge he often tries to give you as little as possible?

God provides us with many things that are free and the things He provides us do not diminish in quality just because they are free.

Salvation is a great example.

We do nothing to either earn it or deserve it; yet this priceless gift is free to those who accept it.

1 Thessalonians 5:9 (NET) – For God did not destine us for wrath but for gaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.

We also have free, unlimited access to God 24/7.

We can communicate with God through prayer no matter where in the world we are, no matter the time of day and no matter how many others happen to be praying.

Philippians 4:6 (NET) – Do not be anxious about anything. Instead, in every situation, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, tell your requests to God,

The gifts God bestows upon us are remarkable.

They are also completely reliable.
